Singing Techniques

The distinguished laryngologist Dr. Friedrich S. Brodnitz wrote

"Knowledge is necessary to understand the functions of our voice, to guard its health and to handle any danger that threatens to destroy it." Keep your voice healthy 1988-Pro-ed.

Singing technique shouldn't just be a series of exercises that the student performs blindly not knowing why they are doing them. The vocal cords are the singer's instrument. Unlike a guitarist or pianist, the singer cannot see their instrument.
When technique is properly explained, the vocalist begins to understand the purpose of exercising the vocal cords in the right way and and he or she learns to ‘feel' what is right. The higher notes use more cord tension, more cord tension means a loss of the heavier sound to make high notes seem effortless. This process cannot be forced or pushed otherwise the cords will be helped by the muscles outside the larynx, the sound will be heavy and loud and there is a danger of vocal problems occuring or loss of range.
Singing technique training gives the opportunity of building a far better voice, and the added benefits of long term vocal care. The professional singer has to be especially concerned with vocal care and normally reacts to the slightest disorder of vocal imbalance by seeking out a voice coach to correct it. On the other hand the amateur who gets hoarse often battles on until they lose range and voice quality.
